Sale Fail
A reader sent this email conversation regarding an ad she saw on a popular horse-selling website. She points out that the advertised horse's name, which she checked with the Arabian registry, is actually a mare, even though the ad is for a gelding. If an ad seems too good to be true...and we have to laugh, really, at this stinker as he tries to con the buyer. It's pretty pathetic.

Hello
Thanks for the interest shown in this Gelding. (Name of a registered Arabian Mare) is a handsome and loving Arabian Gelding.
He was born foaled in 2008
He is trained in Trail/Endurance, basic Dressage, and English
Pleasure. He has been ridden in English and Western saddles, in
indoor and outdoor rings, and on extensive trails at many locations - with gaited and non-gaited horses.
He is great in the field, in the stall, in temporary fencing, and on
picket/highlines. He has been ridden anywhere from short ring lessons to 20 miles with no ill effect. He is sound healthy, up to date on shots, Coggins, and worming. He trailer loads, clips, and bathes. He is fond of adults, children, dogs, and other horses, and is not a boss horse in his field. He is good for the vet, farrier, saddle fitter, and equine dentist with NO sedation.
(Name of a registered Arabian Mare) is genetically tested CLEAR from SCID,and he is negative for LFS.
He has not had any foals but due to his clear genetic background, great
bloodlines, and conformation, he is a wonderful brood gelding prospect. I unfortunately cannot afford two horses at this time, and would love to find (Name of a registered Arabian Mare) a home that loves him. I am negotiable on price, so please feel free to make a reasonable offer as my main aim is his happiness. I have owned (Name of a registered Arabian Mare) for three years now and he is amazing.
I am (Eastern European ethnicity) and staying in (Southwest state), USA where (Name of a registered Arabian Mare) currently at.
He will be going for $3000 .
I will like to know the following from you;
Are you used to this breed?
Do you have other horses?
are you a novice, professional or amateur ?
where are you from ?
I will be waiting for your response to let you know how to proceed.

Thank you for responding to my email but there appears to be some
misunderstanding. The horse I was interested in is located in Los Angeles, is older, and has a different name.

Hello again,
thanks for the mail back but i just want to let you know that, this is
the horse and i used to live in Los Angeles but i just relocated to
(state in the southwest) because of the death of my child and also because of my busy work schedule, so you can just imagine what i am going through now.
As for the name, it is correct okay. the one you know is his funny
pets name but his real name is (Name of a registered Arabian Mare), you can find it on his pedigree i sent to you. so if you are still interested in this horse, we can still come with a final decision so that i can look for a reputable transport company to transport him over to you without any problem okay.
thanks and wait to read from you.

Please accept my condolences.
I still believe there to be a misunderstanding. The horse I was looking at is a gelding (male) and 10 years old. The horse you mentioned is a mare (female) and she is 5 years old.
I am a member of the AHA and have access to show records and registrations. The owner for the horse you mention is in New York, and the phone number associated with the ad is out of Washington, D.C. There are too many details that have now made me concerned regarding the accuracy of the ad altogether and I no longer have interest in the horse.
Again, please accept my condolences.
